Our Small Firms Merit Award for Research and Technology (SMART) programme helps individuals and small businesses that want to research the technical and commercial feasibility of innovative products and processes.

SMART enables businesses to share research and development (R&D) financial risks, and also to increase their competitiveness and their investment in innovation.

Competitive financial awards

The SMART stage one and two programme elements support individuals and small firms in carrying out technical and commercial feasibility studies over a 6-18 month period. SMART financial awards are competitive. Assistance is not automatic, but you could receive up to £45,000 at stage one carry out the research, and up to £150,000 at stage two of the programme.

For smaller projects, the SMART Micro programme offers grant assistance of up to £10,000. This can be used to fund the development of low-cost prototypes of products or processes.

Who is eligible?

SMART is open to individuals intending to start a business in Northern Ireland, sole traders, partnerships, independent companies, or part of a group operating from or planning to operate from Northern Ireland that meets the EC definition of a ‘small or micro enterprise’.
