Event Format

These interactive zoned events are designed to encourage entrepreneurial thinking and activity among key stage 4 pupils (14-16 year olds).

The events are split into 6 zoned areas with each group of 50 students taking part in each interactive exercise on a rotational basis.

They provide an excellent platform to raise awareness among young people of entrepreneurship and enterprise.

Past attendees have found them to be both productive and enjoyable events.

What will happen in the zones

Young Enterprise NI (YENI)

YENI, the cross community not-for-profit organisation providing a suite of business education programmes to young people in NI, will deliver a session called Enterprise in Action (Hosted by Carolyn Stewart U105). Students will develop, design, plan, build and promote a model for their prototype product. Underpinning enterprise and business concepts are delivered via this prototype challenge. These include planning, 'thinking outside the box', idea generation, being creative and innovative, understanding competition, using resources wisely and managing the 'team'.The winning group in each session will receive a lucrative reward for their successful product!

Advantage
Advantage NI, a new organisation providing youth focused business start-up and development services, will expose groups to how businesses generate new ideas in order to segment a market. Groups will be tasked with developing an innovative new Mars product, producing a product name, promotional poster, marketing strapline and target market. The best concept as decided by the judges will win a prize.

Prince's Trust
The Prince's Trust, a charity that helps young people overcome barriers and get their lives working, will look at turning a hobby into a viable business idea. Douglas Stottard will give a brief talk and demonstration on his business - "NI First Aid Services" and will ask pupils to partake in a live first aid situation. The zone will end with a quiz dealing with various aspects of starting and developing a business.

Almac
Almac Group, a locally owned company providing world-class pharmaceutical solutions globally, will carry out a presentation on the drug discovery process with presenter science demo. The hands on session will require each group to dress 1 person up in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and put them in the correct place in the drug discovery pipeline. The final element of the zone will ask pupils to test their hands for contamination.

Oh Yeah
Oh Yeah, a dedicated music centre established to help new music businesses, will provide the plenary session to all pupils which will study of the rise and rise of Snow Patrol - an overnight success that was over 10 years in the making. Pupils will hear how their story is the result of a network of industry professionals in media, marketing, sound production, etc. They will also look at the many career prospects in the music industry. The session will end with an acoustic performance by an up and coming NI band/musician.

Belle Isle Cookery
Belle Isle Cookery, a local provider of hands-on cookery courses and demonstrations, will cover aspects of starting a successful cookery business and will involve demonstrations and hands-on participation from all the pupils.
