Within Business Improvement Services, a small team of People Solutions Advisors are available to provide client companies with free one to one advice and guidance on maximising the employee contribution to business success by improving employee competence, motivation and empowerment
Some of the issues that the Advisors can assist clients with include:
- Getting the basics right: policies and procedures – ensuring that there are firm foundations in place for effective people management and development, that all employees have contracts of employment, that the company is complying with certain legal obligations in relation to health and safety and fair employment and that policies and procedures exist to ensure that people know how to behave and that there is a framework to deal with any problems which may arise.
- Defining organisation structures – assisting companies to clearly define roles and responsibilities, ensuring that all major functions of the business are covered and that a clear reporting structure exists to ensure appropriate supervision and accountability.
- Recruitment and selection – helping companies to use a structured process including effective interview techniques to identify and recruit the right people for business success.
- Performance management – advice and guidance in relation to managing employee performance in the workplace through the use of a system that best meets the needs of the organisation.
- Reward and remuneration – providing assistance in determining cost-effective wage/salary structures and incentive plans to help client companies attract and retain quality staff and ensure that the pay and benefits plan adds value to the business and profit to the bottom line.
- Succession planning – assisting client companies to plan for the future needs of the business to ensure that effective leaders are in place and that any transitions are managed effectively.
- Dealing with employment problems – providing general advice and guidance on people management related issues such as redundancies, dismissals, absence management, discipline, managing poor performance, health and safety issues.

People Solutions Awareness Workshops
People Solutions Awareness workshops complement the advice and guidance provided by the People Solutions Advisor. The workshops provide further detailed knowledge on a particular topic and may be suitable following a visit from an Advisor. Alternatively, a client may request assistance from an advisor to help with implementation of the learning following a workshop.
The purpose of the workshops is to provide a broad understanding of the relevant issue and to equip the participant with foundation knowledge, practical resources and further signposting to ensure that clients have enough knowledge to implement concrete action plans within their companies.
The workshops cover the following issues:
- The practicalities of selecting the right people in the current market;
- Managing your team;
- Leading your people through challenging times;
- Getting the best from your people (performance management);
- Enabling your people to perform (training and development);
- Building a family business to last.

People Solutions Consultancy
Delivered by 3rd party providers, People Solutions Consultancy is designed to address longer term, more specialist projects. The need for consultancy is identified by the People Solutions Advisor following a one to one meeting with the client and will be managed and monitored through to a successful conclusion by the Advisor. Consultancy is available in a variety of areas similar to those addressed by Advisors and Awareness Workshops. Invest NI will cover 49% of the cost of consultancy to a maximum of £15,000.
- Attracting and selecting the right people including innovative sourcing methods in Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Great Britain (GB) and assistance in employing a range of selection methods.
- Getting the most from your people focusing on effective leadership for results, roles and organisational structure, performance management, planning and structuring training.
- Managing reward and recognition including assisting companies to develop effective salary structures for employees in Northern Ireland, ROI and GB. To develop creative and cost effective benefits packages which meet business objectives and offer bonus structures which reward contribution to company performance.
- Managing the family business to include specific support to clarify roles and structures, develop equitable and effective reward strategies, manage succession planning and relationships both between family and non-family members.
