Higher Education Innovation Fund
The Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) is targeted towards the two universities in Northern Ireland, and is designed to foster research, development and technology transfer within academia.
There are two key components to HIEF. The first assists the universities to reach out to businesses through the Queen’s Chief Executive Club and the University of Ulster’s Knowledge Club. The second, funded by Invest NI, involves capturing, exploiting and providing the personnel to make the best use of intellectual property.
The key benefits to the universities are:
- creation of a mechanism to successfully transfer knowledge and technology to businesses, to generate new wealth and to progress towards a knowledge-driven economy
- recruiting and training of new technology transfer officers and provision of financial assistance to protect intellectual property
- support for continuation of any links with the community and voluntary sectors and public bodies
- networking and interaction between the universities and businesses
Who is eligible?
The current three year pilot programme is only open to Queen’s University of Belfast and University of Ulster. The call for proposals was issued in March 2004 and projects have been running from the start of the 2004-05 academic year.
