Ballygowan company putts precision into golf

Jul 06, 2009

Ballygowan-based Daly Golf is leading the field on the international golf circuit with a revolutionary ‘Precision’ putter range developed with help and advice from Invest Northern Ireland.

The three-strong range of putters are designed and assembled by Daly Golf, a company formed by golf professional Robin Daly, son of the late Fred Daly, the famed Irish Open winner. The putters are now preferred by golfers, both amateur and professional, from Hong Kong to Europe and North America.

The deal was Daly Golf’s first business outside Northern Ireland and now recent sales have resulted from the company’s marketing activities in Germany and Denmark. In addition, the putters are featuring on the European Tour professional circuit.

Business in Hong Kong, where the sport is now growing strongly, followed the company’s first participation in an Invest NI trade mission to China.

As well as selling its unique putters to a sports business in Hong Kong, Daly Golf used the mission to identify and tie up with a manufacturer in Shanghai to produce heads designed in Northern Ireland. It also uses shafts sourced from a leading Japanese manufacturer.  The company currently employs two people and has plans for additional jobs in the near future.

These are all assembled and quality checked before being shipped out internationally by the company which also has its marketing and administrative headquarters at Ballygowan.

Alan Boyd, Daly Golf’s Marketing Director, said: “Our putter has been designed to blend our unique technology with precision engineering to help players sink more putts on the green. Feedback from our presence at golf events in Europe and Asia has been extremely positive and business is developing steadily – especially following our recent success in the hands of players on the European Tour.

“Invest NI’s support for the development of the business has been extremely important in a number of areas. This encouragement and support helped us to get the business going and to identify market opportunities.

“Support provided by Invest NI in the key area of intellectual property protection has also been vitally important. This was essential because the putters are highly innovative.

“Invest NI’s assistance in terms of practical support and guidance for the business is ongoing,” he added.

Welcoming Daly Golf’s success in exports, Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI’s Trade Director, said: “Daly Golf is a good example of how a small company can use the range of services that we provide to turn knowledge and expertise into a successful product and market this successfully in target international markets. It is now beginning to make a significant impact on a huge but very competitive marketplace through a sharp focus on innovation.

“The company is using the flexible support that we provide through our missions and other marketing support to establish a strong presence on the very lucrative international golf circuit,” she added.
