BASE wins export business in Switzerland

Feb 06, 2008

Aerospace engineering consultancy BASE of Dundonald has won a major export deal for its expert services in Switzerland.

The company, which has taken part in a series of Invest Northern Ireland export programmes including trade missions and exhibitions such as the Farnborough, Paris and Berlin air shows, is working with Zurich-based Jet Aviation on a new aircraft project.

Jet Aviation is a global leader in aircraft engineering, refurbishment and maintenance services. BASE has an established client portfolio that includes Bombardier Aerospace as well as suppliers of major aerostructures to Boeing and Airbus.

Ian Kelly, a BASE founding director, announcing the success with Jet Aviation, said: “This is very significant business for us from one of the world’s most respected engineering businesses in commercial and private jet aviation services.

“We gained the business because of the scale of our experience and reputation for excellence in key disciplines such as stress analysis that we’ve provided over the years to other aircraft engineering operations. The decision was also influenced by our expertise and extensive investment in state-of-the-art computer technology.

“Using our extensive industry experience and technology, we provide customers with the specialist skills needed to ensure the structural integrity of their products throughout the design phase, certification and into service. Customers are also able to draw on our knowledge in areas including composite structures, fatigue and damage tolerance, systems and vibration testing.

“Our participation in Invest NI programmes, including Preparing for Export, has enabled us to strengthen our export marketing activities and to make important contacts which have led to new business in Europe and further afield,” he added.

Welcoming BASE’s success, Alan Hingston, Invest NI’s Director of Trade, said: “This is an extremely encouraging and strategically important contract for BASE, a company focused on high value added services in the internationally traded services sector. This is an area that Invest NI is keen to encourage given the significant export potential.

“BASE is also an integral part of aerospace engineering and manufacturing, one of the most significant industrial clusters. It’s a cluster that we are encouraging to grow faster through participation in major international exhibitions in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

“BASE is an ambitious and entrepreneurial company which has seized the opportunities provided by these initiatives to grow its international business,” he added.
