Evergreen Lawns aims for fast growth in Britain

Jul 01, 2008

Eglinton-based Evergreen Lawns is investing almost £1 million to grow sales of its ready-to-lay lawn turf and tile products in Great Britain. The company is being assisted by Invest Northern Ireland to develop new business it has pinpointed in key market sectors there.

The expansion, which is expected to provide seven new jobs by the end of 2009, was announced by John Jameson Snr, Managing Director of Evergreen Lawns, and welcomed by Des Gartland, Manager of Invest NI’s North West Regional Office (NWRO) in Londonderry.

The company is aiming to develop sales with retailers, local authorities, contractors and sports clubs in Great Britain, and particularly the Isle of Man.

Outlining the investment, Mr Jameson said: “This expansion is being made to enable us to carry forward the 47 per cent growth in our sales that we’ve experienced since 2004. A shortage of suitable land has constrained our growth. We’ve now addressed this by the purchase of an additional 125 acres of land at Myroe, near Limavady.

“This will enable us to grow our range of various lawn types from seed and to meet the growing demand for small and big rolls for landscaping and turf tiles for small areas such as the repair of damaged lawns or pitches.  Without this additional land on which to grow lawn turf, we will not be able to expand and to keep up with what is an increasingly competitive marketplace.

“Invest NI’s support and encouragement to develop our capability in essential areas such as export marketing has been invaluable and has given us the confidence to push ahead quickly with this immensely important investment for the long term growth of the business in both new and established markets,” he added.

Describing Evergreen Lawns as an ambitious and enterprising family business, Mr Gartland said: “This expansion meets our three strategic priorities, it is an entrepreneurial and successful business that has a clear focus on innovative products and services geared for markets outside Northern Ireland.

“It is dedicated to improve continuously the quality of its lawn turf products, to provide an unbeatable service to customers and is continually seeking new ideas in sowing and harvesting techniques that will help to increase its competitiveness in existing and new markets.

Through its expansion into export markets the company aims to generate over 33 per cent of its sales outside Northern Ireland. “The expansion of this export-focused business, in addition, is an important boost to the economy of a predominantly rural community,” he added.

Evergreen Lawns Ltd was formed in Eglinton by Mr Jameson in 1999.
