Invest Northern Ireland’s Go For It campaign has created a buzz across Northern Ireland about starting a business. Over 5500 people have attended the Start a Business shows and 4200 people have rung the enterprise helpdesk to find out about the help available for new businesses.

As a result almost 1000 people have had interviews with their local enterprise agency about setting up a business.

Maybe you’ve thought about starting a business but haven’t yet taken the first step. Why not take a few minutes now to think about some of the issues?

Think about why you want to start a business. Is it:
To be your own boss?
To earn more money?
To have work?
To use your skills fully?
To be independent?
To have more flexibility and control?
Because you have a good idea?
Because you’re fed up with your job?
Understanding what is prompting you to consider starting a business will help you decide if this is something you are committed to, or a reaction to your current circumstances.

Now consider your personal qualities. Do you have what it takes? Self confidence
Physical and mental stamina
Resilience and perseverance
Willingness to take risks
Able to live with insecurity
Patience and determination – it takes time to build a business
Flexibility and an open mind
A good sense of humour!

Remember that running a business will affect your lifestyle. Although you may hope that being self-employed will give you more time, perhaps to spend with your family, in the early days it will almost certainly take up a lot more of your time than you imagine.

So you need to be aware of the sacrifices you’ll have to make as well as considering the potential rewards.

Eamon Mulvenna of Invest NI comments: “We’re delighted at the response we’ve had so far to the Go For It campaign and the number of people who are contacting our enterprise network to find out more about how to set up a business. But we know that there are many others who have good ideas for a business but haven’t yet taken that first step.

“Several more Start a Business shows are planned across Northern Ireland and we would urge people to go along to one in their area. In the meantime anyone who has an idea for a business can contact Invest NI or their local enterprise agency, or call the enterprise helpdesk on 0808 127 0000.”
