Invest NI helps Antrim company build export sales success

Sep 29, 2008

Antrim-based supplier of architectural aluminium systems Metal Technology Ltd has significantly increased export sales thanks to support from Invest Northern Ireland.

Metal Technology designs, manufactures and distributes innovative aluminium window, door and curtain wall solutions. Since 2004 the company, with support from Invest NI, has invested over £900,000 in management infrastructure, new product development and IT capability. As a result, sales outside Northern Ireland now represent over 70 per cent of total revenue, which grew by over a quarter in 2007 alone.

Calvin Wilson, Sales and Marketing Director of Metal Technology, said: “We put strong emphasis not only on product quality, but also on customer service and after sales care. This has helped the business to grow more and more quickly each year and cemented our position as a UK leader in the architectural aluminium market.

“We are currently investing in new offices and have recently purchased new machinery in order to reduce lead times to customers. However, in order to achieve our aim of reaching an annual turnover of £20 million by 2011, we realised that we must also develop our human resources function and overall leadership capability.

“Invest NI has helped us to do this and we recently recruited a HR manager who will help to fill this skills gap and better develop our staff. This will in turn free up valuable time for myself and management colleagues to generate further business in the UK and Republic of Ireland markets.”

Mr Wilson added: “We have already contributed to significant construction projects in RoI and throughout the UK, including Aintree Racecourse as well as two major hospitals in Scotland and a range of education initiatives. Through this we have established important relationships with main contractors, such as Carillion PLC and Balfour Beatty, which we hope to develop into the future.”

Kevin McCann, Invest NI’s Director of Transport, Construction and Tourism, said: “Metal Technology has built a sound reputation in export markets through excellent workmanship and a commitment to after sales care. This kind of skilled and high value-added activity has seen the company establish key partnerships with the top UK Contractors which will be key to long term growth.

“Metal Technology is now seeking to consolidate its UK market position and continue to grow its revenue from export markets. By recruiting a dedicated HR manager, the company will reinforce its overall leadership capability and be well equipped to add significant value to the local economy into the future.”
