With a population of 82 million people who have a high level of disposable income, Germany is the UK's largest European export market, and the world's third largest economy. As such it is offers high quality export opportunities to local companies.

This was the message given recently to twenty-five local companies who attended a seminar organised by Invest Northern Ireland in conjunction with Trade Partners UK to get advice on developing business in Germany.

“Germany is Northern Ireland's largest export market after the ROI and offers excellent opportunities for local companies in many industrial sectors, particularly ICT, electronics, automotive components, aerospace, creative industries, energy and consumer products,” says Alan Hingston, Invest NI’s Director of Trade.

“However, it is also a highly sophisticated and competitive market and it requires time and perseverance to establish trade with it. This seminar addresses some of the key issues that companies need to be aware of and gives them the chance to hear from local companies, such as Infineer and Bridgedale, which are already trading in the German market.”

The seminar included a presentation by Bernd Klein, Commercial Officer, Trade Partners UK, Hamburg, who was also available for short one-to-one meetings with participants after the event.

Participants at the seminar included representatives from companies in the IT, engineering, textiles and manufacturing sectors.

The value of Northern Ireland trade with Germany in 2000/01 was £221 million.
