McDowell and Service, a Belfast dental laboratory is investing over £15,000 to increase export sales and attract more customers from the Republic of Ireland, with support from Invest Northern Ireland.

McDowell and Service provides bespoke products for use in dentistry, including crowns and veneers, as well as dental appliances and implant restorations. The company uses a mixed range of raw materials and high-tech methods of production.

Amongst the firm’s equipment is a technologically advanced milling machine which enables products such as metal free crowns to be fabricated from a standard dental scan, more efficiently, quickly and accurately than traditional methods. The machine also ensures that all finished products fit to the highest levels of precision and are highly resilient.

This external sales project aims to help the company exploit its advanced technology and increase its sales in markets where there is high demand for premium dental products.

Invest NI has offered over £6,000 to support marketing activities to help the firm retain existing export customers and generate new business for its range of dental solutions.

Brian Dolaghan, Invest NI’s Director of Engineering and Business Services, said: “Local firms such as McDowell and Service can significantly increase their turnover and profitability by targeting new markets or existing markets outside Northern Ireland. This company has a number of unique selling points. Through this investment, it aims to promote its specialised services to customers in the Republic of Ireland.”

Mr Dolaghan continued: “McDowell and Service already has a number of high value clients in the Republic of Ireland, and it is working to build upon this and establish itself as a preferred supplier of dental products.”

Jennie Cochrane, Finance Director of McDowell and Service, said: “We have increased our technological capability in recent years. Our new milling machine, the first in NI to be incorporated in a full service laboratory, has given us a real opportunity to differentiate our service offering and become even more competitive in external markets.

“Invest NI is helping us to do this as we implement a specific marketing campaign in the Republic of Ireland. We are planning to visit the region to further promote our services and explore new business opportunities there. Other marketing channels which we will use include trade shows, exhibitions, advertising and PR. We will also continue to deliver for our valued local customer base.

“McDowell and Service has built a strong reputation as a premium provider of quality dental laboratory solutions over the years, and this project will help us to reinforce that status amongst customers in the Republic of Ireland.”

A team of around 40 skilled dental technicians and support staff are currently employed by McDowell and Service at Dargan Court, Belfast.
