Mckendry fabrications building growth in exports

Aug 12, 2008

McKendry Fabrications and Installations, (McKendry) in Coleraine, is being assisted by Invest Northern Ireland to focus resources on developing export sales of innovative stainless steel products.

The company has been offered assistance by Invest NI through its Growth Accelerator Programme (GAP), to develop its export marketing activities, particularly in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

The company’s new business initiative was announced by Colin McKendry, Managing Director of McKendry Fabrications and Installations, and welcomed by Des Gartland, Invest NI’s North West Regional Office Manager.

Mr McKendry said: “Our market research has identified further and significant opportunities for our knowledge and expertise in the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. We are already doing some business in the Republic and have a number of good contacts showing considerable interest in the new products we are developing, particularly in areas such as architectural stainless steel.

“We want to use the expertise that we’ve gained working with high profile clients such as Diageo, Old Bushmills Distillery, Michelin, IVEX Pharmaceuticals, Kerry Group and the Patton Group. The very positive feedback that we’ve gained for our products from these clients has encouraged us to follow up leads in markets outside Northern Ireland.

“To enable us to convert this interest in the Republic and Great Britain into firm business, the company needs to invest substantially in a programme of marketing activities. Invest NI is offering quick access to financial support that will enable us to exploit these niche export opportunities,” he added.

Mr Gartland, announcing the export marketing assistance, said: “GAP assistance offers the company fast track support that will help it to realise a market opportunity it has identified for high added-value stainless steel products that it has developed.

“Our advice and practical support are being provided to help this progressive company realise the significant growth in sales it is projecting for its added value products outside Northern Ireland.

“The assistance is also in line with our focus on encouraging and supporting companies in the North West which are investing in innovation and keen to build business outside Northern Ireland. The company will be able to draw further advice and assistance from the experienced team of business people at the North West regional offices in Derry and in Coleraine,” he added.

McKendry Fabrications and Installations was formed 2001 and has primarily focused on fabrication work in Northern Ireland.  It provides a range of products in stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, mild steel, galvanised steel and powder coated steel.

It has developed from mild steel fabrication work to bespoke stainless steel production, a much higher value added product, which is already successful in the Northern Ireland marketplace.  Products include landmark sculptures, gates, staircases, catwalks, balustrades, handrails, conveyors, cabinets and guard rails.  Focusing on quick turn around and customer satisfaction has lead to a healthy annual growth over the past seven years.

McKendry operates from two separate business locations in Coleraine, Hillman’s Way Business Park and Loughan Hill Industrial Estate. The business currently employs 40 people encompassing mechanical fitters, coded welders, industrial pipe fitters, sheet metal fabricators and a small administration team.
