Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has expressed her confidence that the local economy will see the rewards from the foundations which have been put in place this week in the USA.
On her return from the US-NI Economic Conference, the Minister said: “The focus of this week has very much been about building a knowledge-based economy in Northern Ireland, built on high value inward investment and developing collaborative opportunities.
“Coinciding with this week’s hugely encouraging Economic Conference in Washington, a number of our successful businesses also visited the USA to further develop business opportunities.
“Nine of our leading aerospace companies have used the opportunity to meet buyers from four major US aerospace firms in a bid to gain new business, while thirteen life sciences experts took part in the annual Connected Health Symposium in Boston. This year’s event included, for the first time, the “Opportunities for collaboration between the USA and Europe” event to further develop the excellent business and academic relationships we have there in Connected Health.”
Arlene Foster continued: “Alongside Connected Health, we have key strengths in Oncology, Diagnostics, Medical Devices and are increasingly well placed to realise the benefits of increased commercialisation of innovation and invention, through our world class universities and research facilities, the quality of our science parks and incubator facilities and our 100% broadband coverage and high speed international connectivity.”
This is the first public event being hosted by The Northern Ireland Massachusetts Connection (NIMAC), a group dedicated to advancing business, research and clinical collaboration between Massachusetts, Northern Ireland and Europe.
Reflecting on the week’s events, the Minister concluded: “Attracting high quality inward investment, encouraging businesses to invest more in R&D and developing collaborative networks between universities and companies to share expertise, knowledge and resources to develop and win global business, has the potential to deliver immense benefits to our economy.”
