Northern Ireland trade group seeks Gulf business

Nov 19, 2008

Top executives of 23 Northern Ireland companies are taking part in two Invest NI initiatives in the Arabian Gulf region over the next 10 days. The initiatives have a strong construction industry focus and include the Big 5 building showcase in Dubai, from 23-27 November.

Sixteen companies are visiting Dubai, Oman and Qatar on an Invest Northern Ireland trade mission from 17-24 November. The mission is the second to the oil-rich Gulf region in the past three months.

The group includes companies across a broad range of business sectors which have a longstanding commitment to international trade and have been active in the Gulf for many years.

Among the industries represented in the delegation are construction, healthcare, food and recruitment. Northern Ireland is an acknowledged global centre of excellence in construction equipment, ICT and food processing, particularly dairy products.

The engineering and construction group includes companies specialising in emergency/portable power, minerals extraction and processing, and solar-powered directional signs. Northern Ireland’s expertise in the design and manufacture of mobile machinery for crushing, screening and washing is represented by Terex Minerals Processing, part of the US Terex construction equipment group, and SRS, a leading manufacturer of concrete block making machinery.

SRS machinery has been used in the construction of several of Dubai’s best known buildings. Shaw Automation specialises in security and building control systems, while PWS Ireland designs and manufactures electronic signs, including solar powered directional systems.

Boomer Industries has established a business base in the Gulf for the supply of its plastic extrusions for construction and other related industries.

Another industry in which Northern Ireland has an international reputation is standby/emergency power, represented by AJ Power, which recently signed a collaborative agreement with Massey Ferguson and Hutchinson Power.

Ulster Carpet Mills, a world leader in the design and manufacture of Axminster carpets, has significant business in the Middle East and has supplied products to the prestigious Burj al Arab hotel in Dubai.

Eight construction industry companies will be showing a broad range of products and expertise at Big 5, the biggest building exhibition in the Middle East.

Alan Hingston, Invest NI’s Trade Director, commenting on the mission and its objectives, said: “Both initiatives have attracted strong delegations of experienced export companies offering a wide range of products and expert services. Many have been operating in the Middle East, especially the Gulf, for some time and have significant business there.

“We’ve been working with delegation members, especially the construction groups, on the identification of new business opportunities in the Emirates and other parts of the Gulf, which have significant oil revenues to spend,” he added.

Other members of the delegation are: Abacus Professional Recruitment, recruitment services; Biznet, an IT specialist, Ciga Healthcare, diagnostic products; and MWM Sports Management, training and leisure incentives.
