Tyrone Food Firm has Appetite for Export Success

Sep 15, 2005

A speciality fine foods firm has been established in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone as part of a £490,000 investment supported by Invest Northern Ireland.

Marvelway – based at the Food Business Incubation Centre in Loughry College – produces a range of high quality smoked and cured meats, and other deli products, for customers in the premium European retail and food service markets.

Assistance and advice, obtained through the Invest NI Western Local Office in Omagh, initially helped Marvelway with market research and the development of products and processes. This enabled the firm to explore potential markets and complete an export focussed business plan.

“Having carried out a detailed analysis of our target markets, we identified several viable business opportunities in the premium food and retail sectors,” says Marvelway Managing Director, Trevor Cunningham. “Further support from Invest NI helped us to set up the business, actively market our brand and products in key markets, and utilise new technology which has been instrumental in developing new and improved additions to our range.”

“With a rapidly growing demand in Europe for speciality meat products, convenience foods and high value added meat goods, I am confident that we will experience a significant increase in export sales and become a key supplier in this competitive market. We are on target to secure almost £1 million of advance orders in our first year of operation and this figure could double by 2007.”

Despite only being in operation for three months, Marvelway competed against numerous other UK and RoI companies in the Guild of Fine Food Retailers Great Taste Awards 2005, held recently in London, where the firm won four prestigious gold awards.

Leslie Morrison, Chief Executive, Invest NI, adds: “Invest NI is committed to helping firms like Marvelway, develop export potential and grow through innovation. Such ventures are vital to the local community and the economy as they create wealth and secure employment.

“A unique product portfolio, developed with the most advanced smoking and curing processing technology available, combined with an ongoing commitment to R&D, will provide a firm foundation for the company as it continues to carve a niche in the European food and retail sector.”
