Strength of NI Life Sciences Sector On Show in UAE

Northern Ireland’s vibrant life and health sciences sector will be at the heart of future economic growth, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has said.

The Minister was speaking during a visit to the UAE’s largest life and health sciences exhibition Arab Health, where 15 local companies were represented.

Arlene Foster said: “The huge crowd in attendance at Arab Health and the high level of interest shown in Northern Ireland companies exhibiting here shows exactly how vibrant the sector is.

“Life sciences have been identified as one of the priority sectors that will drive the future growth of Northern Ireland's economy. By encouraging innovation and stimulating research and development, we can use leading edge technologies to boost exports and encourage further investment.

“Northern Ireland's continued creativity in life sciences can also be seen in the competitive medical diagnostics sector, with companies such as Randox, Fortress Diagnostics and CIGA Healthcare leading developments in the medical diagnostic, point of care and over the counter (OTC) markets.

“Job creation is a tangible example of the real benefits this highly export focused sector can bring. Just two weeks ago, for example, Randox announced 540 new jobs in Antrim at a new site which will house a modern manufacturing facility, state-of-the-art research and development laboratories.

“These are the sort of specialised, high quality jobs that can make a real difference to people’s lives and I look forward to hearing of more success for our local companies following their participation in Arab Health.”
