Orthodocs Limited, the Holywood-based medical equipment company, has won its first business in Europe with help from Invest Northern Ireland. The company is supplying its unique ‘Cocoon’ bumper bed system to clients in Germany.
The business follows the company’s participation in an Invest NI trade mission to Germany and practical support from the agency’s trade development centre in Dusseldorf. The Cocoon is a totally enclosed bumper system that has been designed specifically by Orthodocs to meet the needs of hospitals, nursing homes and carers, which have experienced problems associated with bed entrapment and injury.
Announcing the business breakthrough in Germany, Terry Hickland, European Business Development Director, said: “This is a tremendous boost for the company and has given us a strong platform on which to build business in other European markets. We had been evaluating a number of new markets and opted for Germany, largely because having previously worked there for a number of years and fluent in German, I was prepared to follow up all potential leads.
“The trade mission came at the right time and gave us an opportunity to explore the market and also to access on-the-ground support from the team in Dusseldorf. Their input in terms of market knowledge and lead generation was invaluable and helped us in particular to get the first step right – appointment of a good and committed distributor in Cologne.
“The distributor has produced a number of deals for us that have provided essential reference points for other potential customers in Germany. One new customer in particular, a large national charitable care institution, is currently evaluating the Cocoon system with a view to placing a large order. Feedback from existing customers has been excellent and we are now negotiating new business in other centres such as Munich and Berlin.
Welcoming the orders won by Orthodocs, Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI’s Trade Director, said: “This is another encouraging success story flowing from our strategic focus on the hugely important German marketplace.
“The marketing drive supported by our team in Dusseldorf, is helping smaller companies in particular to win worthwhile business in Germany. The recent successes also show clearly that SMEs, across a broad range of sectors, can compete in this very demanding but rewarding European market.
“Companies that succeed in the highly competitive and quality conscious German market can win business elsewhere in Europe.”
