Sep 01, 2005

MJM Group, based in Rathfriland, Newry has announced a £6.9 million re-investment programme with the help of Invest Northern Ireland that could lead to 75 extra new jobs for the company raising the total number of employees to 150.

MJM Group, which has recently received $8 million worth of orders from American cruise lines, was founded in 1987 by Managing Director Brian McConville. The Group specialises in public area and accommodation fit-out contracts on cruise ships and ferries as well as in the hotel, corporate and retail sectors across the UK, Europe and USA.

To facilitate the company’s aggressive growth strategy, the MJM Group plans to move to a new purpose built 100,000 square foot factory and 30,000 square feet of adjoining office space on a 13 acre site within the Carnbane Industrial Estate in Newry. This expansion will facilitate a significant increase in factory through-put and staffing levels through investment in automated production equipment and processes.

Invest NI has offered the company £290,000 worth of assistance to help make the re-investment programme a reality. Welcoming the project Kevin McCann, Director of Transport, Construction and Tourism in Invest NI said:

“This ambitious programme will provide the platform for developing MJM Group’s exporting presence within Europe and the USA, allowing the company to develop and broaden its customer base in these rapidly expanding markets. Once the move is complete, I am more than confident that MJM Group will become a significant global player.”

Commenting on the re-investment programme, Hugo Wilson CEO of MJM Group said:

“This move represents a significant opportunity to develop our services and products. We have outgrown our current premises and need to move to facilitate our expansion. By bringing in new staff, equipment and processes we will be able to capture more business in our fast moving markets to become a world leader within the global refurbishment market place.”

Welcoming the development councillor Pat McGinn, Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council said:

“I welcome this announcement which will have a real impact on the local economy, not only in terms of job creation but in the development of Newry and Mourne’s reputation within an important business sector. MJM Group is one of several high calibre companies who through innovation and hard-work are helping to enhance the economic profile of the North of Ireland.”
