North West renewable energy company invests over £430,000 to grow exports

Invest Northern Ireland is helping North West company Rural Generation Ltd invest over £430,000 to target increased export turnover.

Established in 1996 with a strong focus on R&D, the company plants, harvests and processes its own willow tree biomass fuel source and supplies a range of advanced boilers. Rural Generation also specialises in environmentally responsible methods for the recycling and disposal of waste materials, such as sludge and effluent.

With this investment, the business will roll out a major marketing campaign targeting the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain, USA and Canada. Alongside this Rural Generation will strengthen its workforce, with the recruitment of dedicated business development executives to generate sales, and installation engineers to meet the increased demand.

As a result, the company is aiming for a fivefold increase in turnover within three years, with more than half of all sales to be generated in markets outside Northern Ireland.

Des Gartland, Manager of Invest NI’s North West Regional Office, said: “Rural Generation has placed renewable energy and environmental technologies at the centre of its operations since its establishment. This extensive experience and expertise in what is still an emerging sector positions the company very strongly as it now seeks to fully exploit its considerable research activity in key markets.

“This kind of investment in biomass energy and recycling technologies is indicative of the commercial opportunity that exists in the wider renewables and environmental sectors. The growth of this global market, and ways in which more local companies can take advantage, will be explored in Invest NI’s Energy & Environment Conference 09 in Belfast on 14 October.

“The free-to-attend event will feature informative and inspirational addresses from top international industry experts and represents a valuable networking opportunity for businesses wishing to find out more.”

Dr John Gilliland, Chairman of Rural Generation, commented: “The high quality of our product and service offering is built on the knowledge gained from years of scientific investigation coupled with a commitment to sustainability. This now provides a solid basis on which we can grow commercially.

“The renewable energy and environmental sectors have never been so buoyant. The support of Invest NI for this investment will enable us to fully tap into this potential and establish a real foothold in lucrative international markets.”
