Join Invest Northern Ireland's five day multi-sectoral trade mission to Sweden and Denmark which will be centred in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Companies from Northern Ireland already export over £88.5m in goods and services to Sweden and Denmark and our trade mission represents an excellent opportunity for companies willing to expand into both countries.

Sweden

Sweden is a wealthy, prosperous and developed country.  According to the World Bank it ranked 22nd for gross domestic product (GDP) globally. Additionally Sweden is one of the world leaders in investment into research and development (R&D) spending around 3% of GDP annually.

Sweden is the 10th easiest country in which to do business according to the World Bank Report 2017. English is widely used and Swedes are open-minded to new ideas and products.

Market opportunities in Sweden:

  • Transport, Construction and Infrastructure - The Swedish government currently has a 10-year infrastructure spending plan in place worth around £64 billion. This covers road, rail and other major projects. It also covers infrastructure improvements such as new developments, as well as extra funds for maintenance.
  • Life Sciences - The Swedish healthcare market is by far the biggest in the Nordic region, with turnover of about SEK 76.8 billion (£7.7 billion). This amounts to 9.6% of GDP. Sweden is a global leader in the field of life science and has one of the highest per capita spending in Europe on R&D within this sector.
  • Cyber Security and Defence - Securing cyber networks is an increasing concern for businesses and organisations worldwide with 81% of larger organisations and 60% of smaller ones having a cyber-related security breach in the last year.
  • Fashion and Retail - Consumers in Sweden have strong purchasing power. They have double income households and lower social costs compared to many other European countries. This makes the country a rewarding place for international brands to expand.
  • Food and Drink - There is a growing demand for more sophisticated products, such as convenience food, tropical fruits, berries (fresh and dried), healthy snacks, and more refined beverages. The main attributes for a successful export product are good quality, low fat content, healthy, and easy to prepare. Opportunities for UK companies include organic, free from and ready to eat.

Denmark

Denmark has one of the more robust economies in the EU. It has a wealthy, educated and open economy, receptive to UK products and investments. Danes are sophisticated buyers with a good reputation for paying suppliers on time.

Although small, it is also one of the most competitive economies in the world with an efficient workforce and highly developed infrastructure. Danish business is characterised by minimal bureaucracy, high education, robust purchasing power, ease of access and widespread use of the English language.

The World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ report ranks Denmark third in the world.

Market opportunities in Denmark:

  • Infrastructure and engineering - Denmark currently has extensive opportunities within construction, engineering and transportation. This includes one of the largest rail renovation projects in Europe, running until 2025.
  • Cleantech and energy - Denmark is the world leader in Cleantech and low carbon related industries. Danish companies control one third of the global wind market and are the world leaders in supply chain technologies to the wind industry.
  • Healthcare - Denmark currently has one of the largest hospital infrastructure projects in Europe. An estimated £4.5 billion will be spent from 2013 to 2020 on new super hospitals countrywide.
  • United Nations - There is a growing demand for more sophisticated products, such as convenience food, tropical fruits, berries (fresh and dried), healthy snacks, and more refined beverages. Our trade team in Belfast will be on hand with advice and guidance to help you prepare for the mission. Working with our in-market trade advisors we can provide tailored market research and arrange individual appointments for your company. The cost of this service is heavily subsidised by Invest NI and would be cost to company £500 +VAT for one mission centre and £750 +VAT for two mission centres.

Please Note - De Minimis Statement

Companies who have exceeded their De Minimis aid limit will be unable to claim assistance towards travel, accommodation and in-market support for this mission. The maximum De Minimis aid any single recipient can receive is €200,000 (cash grant equivalent) over a 3 year fiscal period.
