Economic Recovery Innovation Grant

Check your eligibility

To make an application, you will need to provide:

  • Your business information
  • An overview of the proposed innovation project
  • Evidence of Silver Level Innovator recognition for the proposed project from Innovate NI
  • Project details including costs, relevant tasks, timeframes and proposed outcomes

You will also need to provide these types of documents electronically:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of business legitimacy
  • Proof of address
  • Bank details
  • Silver Level Innovator recognition

The maximum file size of each attached document is 3MB.

If eligible, the closing date to apply is 5pm on Monday 31 January 2022. However, grants will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If the available budget is fully allocated before the closing date, Invest NI reserves the right to close applications early.

Is your business eligible?

Answer the following questions to find out if you can apply.

1. Is your business based in Northern Ireland?
2. Is your business a small or medium sized enterprise (SME)?
The Economic Recovery Innovation Grant is open to Northern Ireland based small and medium sized enterprises and social enterprises. This includes sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and those businesses at pre-trading stage.
3. Are you able to provide your business HMRC Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), sometimes called a ‘tax reference’ number?
4. Is your business a primary agricultural producer, which is primarily concerned with crops, animal production, forestry, logging, fisheries or aquaculture?
5. Do you have a novel idea that could lead to the development of a new or improved product, service, business model, or process, that will create value in the business, produce new profits or business growth?
“A novel idea” - This is an idea that is completely new to the business, market or world.
6. Do you know which activities you will undertake to test and develop your idea?
7. Has your project received or requested any other public funding such as government or European Union funding?
8. Have you a current Letter of Offer or received financial assistance from Invest NI within the last three years? (Excluding Innovation Vouchers and COVID Recovery Schemes)

The COVID Recovery Schemes include:

  • Business and Financial Planning Grant
  • Digital Selling Capability Grant
  • Energy Efficiency Capital Grant
  • Micro business E-commerce grant
  • Productive Investment Capital Grant
  • Process and Organisational Improvement Grant
  • Supply Chain Resilience and Development Framework

10. Which level of innovation certificate did you receive?
11. Did you receive your silver certificate before 01 April 2021?

Gold or platinum level innovators are not eligible to apply for the Economic Recovery Innovation Grant.

Based on the answers you have provided, you may be eligible for the Economic Recovery Innovation Grant.

However, to progress to the next stage of the application process, your businesses must be assessed and recognised as a silver level innovator by Innovate NI.

If your business is assessed as silver level innovator status, we will send you an email, providing access to complete your application on the Invest NI Customer Portal.

Next steps:

    The Innovation Assessment on Innovate NI will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

  2. Once your submission has been assessed and if your business is recognised as a silver level innovator, you will be sent an email inviting you to apply for the Economic Recovery Innovation Grant.

    The Economic Recovery Innovation Grant application process takes approximately one hour to complete.

    You can save your Economic Recovery Innovation Grant application and return to it at any time, before the closing date of 31st January 2022 at 5pm. Please note: Invest NI reserves the right to close applications early if the available budget is fully allocated before this date.

Based on the answers you have provided, you may be eligible for the Economic Recovery Innovation Grant.

However, to progress to the next stage of the application process, your businesses must be re-assessed to see if it has progressed to silver level innovator status by Innovate NI.

If your business is assessed as silver level innovator status, we will send you an email, providing access to complete your application on the Invest NI Customer Portal.

  2. Once your submission has been assessed and if your business is recognised as a silver level innovator, you will be sent an email inviting you to apply for the Economic Recovery Innovation Grant.

    You can save your Economic Recovery Innovation Grant application and return to it at any time, before the closing date of 31st January 2022 at 5pm. Please note: Invest NI reserves the right to close applications early if the available budget is fully allocated before this date.

Based on the answers you have provided, you may be eligible for the Economic Recovery Innovation Grant.

However, as your silver level innovation certificate was issued before 01 April 2021 your businesses innovator status must be re-assessed.

If your business is re-assessed as silver level innovator status, we will send you an email, providing access to complete your application on the Invest NI Customer Portal.
