AJ Power, the Craigavon-based manufacturer of emergency, standby and prime electricity generators, has won its first business in Russia from its participation in recent Invest Northern Ireland trade missions to this important and developing market.
The Co Armagh engineering company is now supplying gensets to a company in St Petersburg, which is a major distributor of products to the construction industry across Russia. It is also negotiating for rights to the Northern Ireland company’s complete range of power generation equipment.
Initial contact with the Russian business was made by AJ Power’s Sales Director Joe Bradley on the Invest NI mission to Moscow and St Petersburg last October. “This mission, our first to Russia, enabled us to show our products to this distributor in St Petersburg and around 10 others,” Mr Bradley said.
“They were impressed by the quality of our products and our technical support and agreed to place an initial order. I really didn’t expect to do business on the first visit. They were really keen on our equipment and anxious to build up a relationship with us.
“What attracted me to this business was the access offered to the construction sector. While there’s been a bit of a slowdown in the market, the Russian authorities are still investing heavily on major infrastructure projects. Russia has money to invest from its huge oil and gas reserves.
“The most recent Invest NI mission, in late June, gave me the opportunity to visit their operation
in Moscow to explore other business opportunities with them and to see how we can support their operations. As a result of these discussions, we’ll be sending an experienced engineer, Eugene Devlin, to Russia to train the distributor’s staff.
“Our strategic focus is on developing a two-way relationship with them in which we provide excellent technical support for the products they purchase. We’ve also invested in achieving GOST R certification, an essential requirement for any engineering business wishing to do business in Russia.”
Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI Trade Director, welcoming the company’s success in Russia, said: “AJ Power is an enterprising and export-led business that has been quick to identify and exploit the extensive business opportunity in a marketplace that is still growing.
“Our mission programme targets markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, the so-called BRIC developing regions, and offers extensive opportunities to local companies to build contacts in each of them.
“We’ve organised two recent missions to Russia, both of which were well supported by local companies, and will be taking a delegation to Brazil in September. China and India have also featured in our comprehensive trade development initiatives over many years.”
