Companies urged to compete for share of sustainable industries

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster urged local companies to compete for their share of the multi-billion pound global sustainable industries.

The Minister was speaking as she launched Invest Northern Ireland’s Energy and Environment Conference 2009. The event will highlight the major commercial opportunities that are available for local companies to provide a diverse range of products and services to the sustainable and environmental industries, forecast to be worth over $500 billion by 2013.

The conference, to be held in Belfast on 14 October, is free to attend and will be the largest renewable energy and environmental technologies event ever to take place in Northern Ireland. Around 500 companies are expected to take part in the event where they will network, share ideas and hear from internationally renowned industry experts.

Outlining the potential for local companies, the Minister said: “Global demand for renewable energy is growing and the use of low carbon building technologies and environmental processes like water conservation and wastewater treatment is set to increase rapidly.

“Against this background, there are significant opportunities to supply products and services in areas as diverse as mechanical and electrical engineering, composite materials, site investigation, ICT control systems and many more.

“Invest NI’s Energy & Environment Conference 2009 will be a chance to not only learn more about the various industry sectors, but also to cultivate valuable contacts with both established players and newcomers in the field and lay the groundwork for future business deals.”

The Minister concluded: “The conference is free to attend and I urge companies of all sizes to get involved, even if they have no prior experience of renewable or sustainable technologies.”

The event will feature inspirational and informative addresses from leading international figures in renewables and environmental technologies, drawing from the worlds of both industry and academia. Attendees will also have the opportunity to attend focused workshop sessions to discuss specific issues of interest.
