Employing Migrant Workers

Invest Northern Ireland will be holding an Awareness Seminar for companies employing migrant workers in Cohannon Inn & Autolodge, Dungannon on Tuesday 19th April from 1.30-3.00pm.

The seminar is part of Western Enterprise Week taking place from Monday 18 April and closing with the Western Start a Business Show on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April in Omagh Leisure Centre. The seminar will focus on the Code of Practice for the employment of migrant workers.

“With so many companies in the area relying on migrant workers to provide labour it is important to ensure employers are aware of the difficult issues faced by migrants and their responsibilities to these employees,” said Patricia Devine of Invest Northern Ireland.

“We’ve brought together a range of speakers who will look at everything from the practicalities of employing migrant workers, such as applying for work permits, to equality issues,” added Patricia.

At the seminar Denise Cranston of Business in the Community will look at a Code of Practice for employing migrant workers.  Daniel Holder, the project manager of Animate Projects, a strategic interagency project working on migrant worker equality issues with a focus on public service delivery will cover the challenges that face migrant workers and how employers can encourage a positive two-way relationship.

Stuart Reid, O’Kane Poultry and Darragh Cullen, Managing Director of KMC Engineering will look at practical considerations when employing migrant workers, including helping employees with bank transactions, house agreements and the day to day issues facing migrant workers.
