Food Sector Invited To Digest Ways To Cut Energy And Waste Costs

Invest Northern Ireland, in association with the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, is inviting businesses in the food and drink sector to address the problem of rising energy, waste and processing costs by investigating technologies that can impact on a company’s bottom line.

The agency is running a free open day at Loughry Campus in Cookstown next week at which a number of energy technologies will be presented together with case studies showing how companies have used these to make substantial cost savings.

The one-day programme will feature presentations by Invest NI, the Carbon Trust, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Envirowise and local companies. Topics covered will include environmental management, financial assistance available for energy saving projects and specific areas including compressed air, refrigeration and insulation.

Victor Jordan of Invest NI says: “By becoming more energy efficient, companies can slash their energy spending by up to 20 per cent, therefore increasing competitiveness. That’s vital for companies in the food and drink sector, which is facing increasing cost pressures. This open day is an excellent opportunity for businesses to find out about the technology that can help them become more energy efficient and to discover the assistance available from various sources such as Invest NI and the Carbon Trust.”

The programme will also include practical demonstrations of waste and energy control in the food industry, how to minimise food packaging, and advice on selling energy efficiency to the workforce.

“Through resource efficiency, companies can save more than £1,000 per employee each year. Environmental compliance can also help businesses to avoid fines, and reduce both legal and insurance costs,” says Victor Jordan.
