Freeza Meats rewarded for homestyle Aberdeen angus burger
Aberdeen Angus burgers ‘like granny used to make by hand’ earned Freeza Meats of Newry a major award recently in the prestigious British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF) Annual Awards 2009.
The 100% Aberdeen Angus burger, developed with assistance from Invest Northern Ireland, was submitted for the awards, the ultimate event in the UK frozen food industry, by Fairway Food Service, the leading catering business that is a major customer of Freeza Meats. The Newry company is a specialist in burgers for the catering industry in Britain and Ireland.
To add to their success, Freeza Meats has recently been awarded a £1 million contract to supply beef burgers to the Spirit Group, part of Punch Taverns which has over 8,000 public houses throughout Britain. In addition to the Fairways Group, Freeza Meats supplies Netto, Sodexho, Rank Group and many major food distributors across the UK.
The BFFF judges gave the burger a bronze award in the ‘Best New Main Course’ catering category, commenting: “the product is really succulent and juicy with a meaty texture in an individual ‘homestyle’ shape. It introduces a new level of taste experience to the Fairway Burger range. It is made from 100% Aberdeen Angus beef from certified herds”.
Maynard Mawhinney, Invest NI’s Food Director, congratulating the company on its success in the awards, said: “This is very good news for the company which is fast becoming a major supplier to many of the UK’s biggest foodservice organisations as a direct result of its sharp focus on quality and innovative products and excellent customer services.”
Eamon Mackle, Managing Director of Freeza Meats, commenting on the award, said: “This superb endorsement is a marvellous boost for everyone at the company. We’ve clearly succeeded in our objective of creating a hand-formed and richly flavoured burger just like granny used to make in the kitchen at home in the past. We’ve succeeded in recreating for Fairway Food Service an old-fashioned burger with a rich meaty flavour and texture.
“The six ounce Aberdeen Angus burger is the latest in a range of burgers that we’ve created for our customers in food services in Great Britain. Our decision to develop the burger was influenced by market demand for a quality product that also offered a home-made taste. Fairway also found the new burger an outstanding success at the recent Royal Ascot races.
“The award will be immensely beneficial as we seek to strengthen our market position as a key supplier of burgers that offer a rich taste and are consistent in texture and quality. Our Invest NI client executive was exceptionally supportive and helped us access assistance through the Process and Product Development Programme.”
The PPD support was part financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland.
