Invest NI helps Armagh engine specialist motor toward export success

Tangent Engineering, a new business set up in Benburb, Co. Armagh has secured export sales in Latvia, GB and Canada, with support from Invest Northern Ireland.

Joe McCool, owner of the Co. Armagh firm, invested over £298,000 to set up his business, which specialises in the restoration and repair of Gardner Engines, an early 20th century brand of diesel engine, to be used in fishing and charter boats.

Invest NI offered £16,800, to help the firm compete in export markets. The assistance was targeted towards training, production resources and an extensive marketing strategy in order to maximise identified business opportunities. Marketing activities included the development of promotional material and company website, market visits, advertising and attendance at trade shows in a bid to develop new markets for Gardner Engines. The overall project has created employment for 3 full time and 2 part time staff.

Mark Bleakney, Manager of Invest NI’s Southern Regional Office, said: “This is a significant investment for the local area by Joe McCool, who is a highly skilled individual with commendable entrepreneurial spirit.

“Tangent Engineering’s achievements in export markets to date have been remarkable. By continuing to focus on the development of production resources, training and marketing, this niche business could achieve even greater levels of growth in new markets.”

Joe McCool, owner of Tangent Engineering and an experienced electrical engineer, commented: “With over 30 years maritime experience and knowledge of the market, I recognised there were significant export opportunities for Gardner products, to justify creating a full time business.

“Invest NI’s support and assistance has been a key factor in helping to develop the resources, facilities and capability of Tangent Engineering. I’m delighted we’re already exporting to countries such as Canada and Latvia and with further sales opportunities identified in Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East, I am confident the business can continue to achieve significant growth in the future.”
