Invest NI helps Kilkeel company engineer export success

Kilkeel company Moyfab Engineering has cut costs and increased export sales in just six months following a £500,000 investment backed by Invest Northern Ireland.

Moyfab Engineering designs and manufactures steel products for the agriculture and construction industries. With £85,000 of support from Invest NI, the company purchased a state-of-the-art laser tube cutting system. The system has enabled Moyfab to replace traditional manual machining processes with a single, fully automated operation.

The laser system, the first of its kind on the island of Ireland, has enabled Moyfab to increase the range and quality of its products. The system’s high level of precision has also cut the level of waste produced in the manufacturing process, reducing overheads significantly.

Hugh Fitzpatrick, Managing Director of Moyfab Engineering, said: “We have always been driven by exports and have built up an excellent client base in the Republic of Ireland. However, we knew that opportunities existed to further exploit this, and also penetrate new foreign markets, if we could incorporate the latest manufacturing techniques into our operation.

“The new laser cutting system, acquired with Invest NI’s help, has enabled us to add high quality products to our range for which there is a clear market demand. We have also taken advantage of the machine’s automated operation by streamlining our processes, so we can fulfil orders even more quickly and meet the extra demand generated by the new products.”

Mr Fitzpatrick added: “We are now in a position to take forward a programme of research which may help us diversify into the high value aerospace sector.”

Kevin McCann, Invest NI’s Director of Transport, Construction and Tourism, said: “Moyfab Engineering has already established itself as a successful exporter, adding significant value to the local economy. The new laser system will help the company to build on this even further and also encourage a culture of innovation which can only strengthen its long term market position.”
