New Life-Saving Training Model a Global Success
12 December, 2013
TruCorp in Belfast has developed an innovative mannequin for training emergency medical staff with assistance from Invest Northern Ireland.
TruCorp’s TruMan Trauma System, a life-like mannequin, helps teach medical professionals the necessary skills for dealing with a range of life threatening trauma situations including chest tube insertion, needle decompression, airway management, tracheotomy and CPR.
The new product was developed with R&D assistance from Invest NI, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
Carol Keery, Invest NI’s R&D Director, visited the company where she was briefed about the product and the company’s export sales by Colin Foster, TruCorp Managing Director.
Mrs Keery said: “This is a hugely significant development by this small R&D led company which will help medical professionals to save lives in emergency situations. Our support for R&D and other activities including export marketing has enabled the company to turn an original idea into a leading-edge product and to bring it to market quickly as well as successfully.
“This enhances Northern Ireland’s global reputation as a centre of excellence in life-saving medical devices and strengthens our life sciences sector, a priority for Invest NI.”
The company has started shipping to distributors in the US, Europe and Asia.
Mr Foster said: “TruMan Trauma builds on our successful AirSim range for training medical professionals and paramedics in safe and effective airway management.
“TruMan Trauma is a logical extension of this expertise to enable medical staff to gain experience in a wider range of emergency techniques. We launched it in August and have since secured business in the US, China, Japan, Brazil, Italy, Norway, Hungary and Portugal with both new and existing customers including universities, hospitals, clinics and other providers of emergency trauma services.
“The US is proving to be hugely important with around 80 per cent of sales destined for this market.”
The new system, which was designed in collaboration with Torc Product Development in Craigavon, was recently accredited the coveted ‘IDI Product Design; Industrial Product’ award for excellence in product design and innovation. Now in their 15th year, the IDI Awards are among Ireland’s most established and highly commended design awards.
