Smart ideas from Northern Ireland at FOSE 2008 in Washington DC

nnovative technologies for public sector bodies and agencies that improve efficiency and increase access in areas including remote systems, as well as help fight crime will be displayed by a group of Northern Ireland companies at FOSE 2008 in Washington DC from 1-3 April.

Four local companies are exhibiting at FOSE on the Invest Northern Ireland group stand - Armada Central from Newry; Total Mobile, part of Antrim’s Consilium Technologies; BNE Electronics, Antrim; and Learningpool, Londonderry.

In addition, a further six companies are visiting this important exhibition, widely regarded as one of the most significant events in the IT calendar. FOSE is held at the Walter E Washington Convention Centre and is expected to attract 20,000 IT professionals from the US public service.

In addition to participation at FOSE, the world’s biggest public sector procurement event, Invest has also organised a trade mission to New York and Boston from 31 March to 5th April.

Twelve companies are taking part in the mission including five visiting the US for the first time with Invest NI.

The events demonstrate Northern Ireland’s longstanding expertise in the development of leading-edge software for a broad range of applications for both public bodies and private companies.

Alan Hingston, Invest NI’s Trade Director, says: “An increasing number of smaller companies are being encouraged to explore business opportunities in the US provided by our extensive programme of trade activities in this important market that currently contributes over £1 billion - around 25 per cent - of our export earnings.

“The missions are designed to enable the companies to make potentially important contacts in the private and public sectors in three of the main US business centres, Washington, New York and Boston.

“Over the years we’ve found that companies attending FOSE have benefited from information gained about how to access business opportunities from federal and state authorities. Developing this business takes time and perseverance. Attending the event also enables them to identify potential US partners which can help them access the opportunities.

“The companies at FOSE and on the trade mission will also be able to draw on guidance and practical support from our trade advisors in the three centres.”
