Sweet exports for Mullin's ice cream in Dublin

Mullin’s Ice Cream is now supplying its pure dairy ice cream to Donnybrook Fair, Dublin’s gourmet food store with help from Invest Northern Ireland. The ice cream company, based at Kilrea in Co Londonderry, will also be showing its comprehensive range at the Catex catering exhibition in Dublin, from 9-11 February, on the Invest NI Northern Ireland Naturally stand.

The luxury ice cream is being featured at the Donnybrook Fair shop in Greystones, opened last autumn, and is the first outlet in the Republic to display the products under the colourful Mullin’s Ice Cream brand. The company made the contact with Donnybrook Fair at a ‘meet the buyer’ event organised by Invest NI.

Colm Mullin says the Donnybrook Fair business is a significant breakthrough for the company in the Republic, a target export market for the firm. “It gives our brand a very strong presence in one of the most respected retailers in the Dublin area. It’s the first to use the Mullin branding and will help to raise our profile in the Republic,” he adds.

“We have a number of important customers in the foodservice sector in the Republic and have been focusing resources on developing business there for our unique range of quality and rich creamy ice cream.”

Maynard Mawhinney, Invest NI’s Food Director, welcoming the recent export business won by Mullins, says: “This is an important endorsement of the quality and variety of products from this very progressive company.

“The contract will help to increase awareness of the company’s brand in its target market and is a further success story from our extensive programme of ‘meet the buyer’ events that has introduced our companies to most of the leading retailers in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. Mullins is developing a very strong and eyecatching brand in its key markets, particularly outside Northern Ireland.

“As well as helping food companies to pitch for business with leading retailers and foodservice organisations, we are also focusing resources to encourage and assist them to create distinctive and premium brands that will produce higher margins,” he adds.

Mullin’s ice cream was founded in 1954 in Kilrea and is now produced there in a state-of-the-art manufacturing operation that maintains the home-made style of the company’s pure dairy ice cream using milk from the Mullin family’s 200-strong herd of Jersey cows.

As well as a vast range of ice cream, the company produces its own sorbets and specialty ice cream cake desserts.

The company’s dedication to quality in all its products and in every aspect of its business has been recognised by the Ice Cream Alliance which awarded Mullin’s Ice Cream a silver medal in 2007 for its Champagne Sorbet and its achievement of British Retail Consortium accreditation for food-safety.
