Invest Northern Ireland is helping Kilkeel company Toughglass make a name for itself not only in the development of innovative glass engineering services but also in its forward-thinking approach to staff training.
Almost £1.25 million has been invested by Toughglass and Invest NI in staff training and development over the last three years, ensuring that the company keeps pace with changing methods of doing business and remains competitive.
Toughglass employees have been offered the opportunity to develop their skills through on-the-job training leading to nationally accredited qualifications, day release training leading to professional qualifications, and home study courses via e-learning.
All employees, including drivers, administration staff and management have taken part, and to date over 80% of the 170 strong workforce has achieved a nationally accredited qualification at NVQ Level 2 or above.
Victor Jordan of Invest NI’s Business Improvement Services says: “The company has taken a very progressive approach to staff training and has realised that, while the initial investment can seem high, the long-term benefits are substantial. Training has already led to reductions in waste, improved health and safety, and cost savings.”
Toughglass was the first company in Northern Ireland to offer a modern apprenticeship in glass engineering and is recognised as a major contributor to skill improvement in the glass industry. The company has also won training awards and is an accredited Investor in People.
