Oct 04, 2005

Secretary of State Peter Hain MP today announced a £14.6 million investment programme, creating 170 new jobs at Wrightbus Ltd, Ballymena, which will help secure the company’s future.

Speaking during a visit to the company today, Mr Hain said: “The impact this investment will have on the Ballymena area cannot be understated. The investment of £14.6 million is very significant, not only creating 170 additional jobs but also generating as much as £21 million of business for the locally based manufacturing supply chain. Not only will it help safeguard the future of Wrightbus, it will also make a significant contribution to the continued success of the Northern Ireland economy.

“By taking the pro-active step of investing in innovative research and development, Wrightbus will be able to safeguard its position as one of the leading independent manufacturers of public transport vehicles in the world.  This is the type of investment that is needed in the local economy to allow   Northern Ireland to compete successfully in the fiercely competitive global marketplace.”

The investment is the largest in the company’s history, and it is anticipated that it will create an additional 170 jobs for the company.  Invest NI has offered support of £2.7 million for the project.

The investment programme is based on research and development work that will allow the company to develop three new products including a new ‘street car’, a clean air electric hybrid transport vehicle and a new double deck bus based on a new Volvo Chassis, for export across the world

Wrightbus is a major employer in the Ballymena area with approximately 920 staff and is one of the leading manufacturers of buses in the United Kingdom.

With continued support from Invest NI the company has evolved from being a locally focussed business to a global exporter, with clients across the world.

It is anticipated that the project will help develop the company’s local supply chain, currently estimated at £21 million, supplying employment to over 350 people across Northern Ireland
