Around 30 companies, mostly from the construction industry, were briefed by Invest Northern Ireland on how to win business from major global sports events being planned for 2014. These include the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, as well as the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, also in Rio de Janeiro.
Directors and senior managers from the companies, which represent most parts of Northern Ireland, attended the workshop on ‘Global Sports Events’ held in Invest NI’s offices as part of the agency’s focus on business opportunities from such global events.
The workshop carried forward Invest NI’s programme of events to highlight business opportunities from the London Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.
Taking part in the presentation were Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI’s Trade Director, and Andrew Bacchus and Chris Wall, who are UK Trade and Investment experts on opportunities associated with sports events. Jillian Moffet from Scottish Enterprise also outlined plans for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Dr Kell, commenting on the workshop, said: “International sporting events now provide huge opportunities for companies across the broadest range of industries especially in terms of infrastructural development projects.
“However, the global sports infrastructure, fit-out and services market is also becoming increasingly competitive and demanding for suppliers. It is, therefore, essential that companies develop and implement a coherent strategy to bid for the opportunities and to utilise the resources and support available through UKTI, ourselves and our other partners.
“We know of many local companies who are competing successfully in the global sports arena. Several local companies, including Brett Martin, Lagan Group, and Acheson and Glover, are also working on substantial projects associated with the forthcoming 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in London.
“We are confident that there are companies throughout Northern Ireland with the products, skills and overall capability to deliver projects for such international events. Invest NI will continue to highlight the business opportunities developing from such events and to provide practical support that will enable our companies to bid for such important business,” Dr Kell added.
