Emersons' Savings Set In Stone

Nov 22, 2006

Invest Northern Ireland has helped Lurgan based sand and stone specialists, Norman Emerson Group to save over £600,000.

The Norman Emerson Group is one of Ireland’s leading suppliers of products and services to the construction, horticultural, agricultural, landscaping and consumer markets. Products include washed sands, ready mixed concrete, quarry aggregates, prepacked DIY building and horticultural products, and hard landscaping decorative stone.

Assistance from Invest NI through its Business Improvement Agent Programme (BIA) looked at four areas of the company’s operations: material supply service; IT; fuel management and skills.

The three-year programme helps companies improve their operations by systematically examining key processes and procedures. The BIA programme part-funds a dedicated member of staff, who works to achieve savings for the company of at least three times their salary.

Most of the savings achieved by the Norman Emerson Group to date have been in the area of material supply, where the Business Improvement Agent achieved a substantial reduction in downtime through a variety of measures including improving delivery times and introducing performance related bonuses. Savings from the other areas will roll out over time and increase the total achieved from the programme.

Victor Jordan, Invest NI’s Director of Business Improvement Services, says: “The Norman Emerson Group has already far exceeded the savings target set at the beginning of the programme. It now has the potential to realise further significant savings as the result of changes to its IT systems and fuel management operations and will benefit from having embedded a culture of continuous improvement in the company.”

George Emerson, Managing Director of Norman Emerson Group, says: “The BIA programme has been a resounding success for the company. We’ve been able to make a series of improvements to our operations that will bring long term benefit to the company and ensure that we maximise our profitability.”
