Export boost for north west construction business

Londonderry based Ardmore Pre-Cast is helping to build a new quay at Inis Mór - the largest of the Aran Islands in County Galway.

Invest Northern Ireland has been working closely with Ardmore Pre-Cast to assist with marketing its expertise in the Republic of Ireland.  The company is manufacturing high quality concrete blocks for the island’s new Cill Rónáin Quay project, a major infrastructure scheme in the West of Ireland.

The company is making over 342 concrete blocks, the largest group weighing just over 23 tonnes, at its factory at Ardmore.  They will then be shipped from Derry’s Lisahally port to Inis Mór in six loads over the next month.

Des Gartland, Invest NI North West Regional Officer Manager, welcoming Ardmore Pre-Cast’s success, said: “This is an important development for this ambitious company in the marine market which it has been targeting as part of a business growth strategy.

“We’ve been assisting the company in the development and implementation of this export-led strategy in key activities including export marketing. Ardmore Pre-Cast is demonstrating a strong and flexible customer focus that is enabling it to respond quickly to specific market requirements. The reputation it has developed will assist the company as it bids to grow business outside Northern Ireland.”

Eamonn McLaughlin, Ardmore Pre-Cast’s Managing Director, commenting on the impressive project, said: “This is a hugely important project for the company because it is helping us to develop our position in the Republic, a key market for us and which we are keen to grow.

“The contract shows other potential clients that we have the capacity to produce and deliver quality blocks for major projects on time and to specification.

“Galway County Council and the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in the Republic regard the project as a key element of the strategy for the economic regeneration of this area. It’s measure of the quality of Ardmore Pre-Cast’s products that the construction team chose us as a key supplier.

“We’ve also shown our flexibility and adaptability by setting up a production operation at Lisahally which makes the transport process much faster. The blocks were cast in steel moulds at Lisahally and are presently being shipped to Inis Mór. The production schedule was particularly exacting,” he added.

White, Young and Green (WYG), a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm, has provided technical support to Ardmore Pre-Cast in the design and manufacture of various structural pre-cast concrete elements including large capacity tanks, retaining wall units, lintels, marine pipe supports and minor structural components.

The two companies are also working together on bids for further infrastructure projects in Great Britain and the Republic.
