Four young entrepreneurs from Newry joined Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster for an exclusive visit to the historic New York Stock Exchange, (NYSE), today.

The students, from Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School in Newry, won the trip to New York through The Big Idea! business competition, organised by Invest Northern Ireland and Advantage, as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week in November.

The trip to Wall Street was organised by NYSE Technologies, the innovative commercial technology division of NYSE Euronext.

Commenting on the visit, the Minister said: “This is the trip of a lifetime for these deserving young entrepreneurs, who have already demonstrated their enterprising talents through The Big Idea! competition. By visiting some of Wall Street’s most famous institutions, they can gain a greater insight into the world of business and be inspired to further enhance their commercial skills at home in Northern Ireland.

“By harnessing the inventive skills of our young people, we can help create a new generation of entrepreneurs who will continue to develop Northern Ireland’s economy by boosting exports, innovation and profitable growth.”

The young entrepreneurs joined the Economy Minister for a meeting with Duncan Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext at the New York Stock Exchange, and toured the world famous Wall Street financial centre, including its world renowned trading floor.

Duncan Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext, said: “NYSE Euronext was delighted to welcome the Minister and these young entrepreneurs to the New York Stock Exchange. The students are representative of the creative business talent that exists in Northern Ireland, and we are keen to help nurture this ability and ensure that it leads to more commercial success for the region.”

The Enterprise Minister also attended a number of private business meetings in New York, following on from the recent Invest NI trade mission which she led to Boston and San Francisco in October.

Other elements of the trip to Wall Street included visits to the Federal Reserve and the Museum of American Finance.
