GolfJug tees up future in Northern Ireland

Jul 03, 2013

A leading golf lifestyle TV and multiplatform media company, GolfJug, is establishing a head office in Newry, creating 12 new full-time jobs with support from Invest Northern Ireland.

GolfJug.com is the world’s first global golf programming website to be multiplatform and is created by well-known Irish entrepreneurs Greg Francis and Ian McGuinness.

The company’s dedicated web portal will provide golfers around the world with original golf TV and access to performance statistics for professional players as well as video tutorials, competitions and golfing merchandise. It will also stream original golf programmes and weekly news shows.

Welcoming the company’s £600,000 investment, Barry McBride, Invest NI’s Executive Director of International Business, said: “GolfJug is an ambitious start up company with high export growth potential and we are delighted it has chosen Northern Ireland for the location of its head office. Once again the quality of our workforce has been a key influencer in the company’s decision to locate here. This is an innovative new venture that will be able to tap into the local software development talent pool here in Northern Ireland.”

Invest NI has offered GolfJug support through the Jobs Fund to create the 12 new jobs as well as over £160,000, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, towards research and development. In addition to the new jobs promoted through the Jobs Fund, this project has the potential to create 52 indirect jobs with local outsource providers.

Commenting on the business, Greg Francis said: “The Portal is a natural progression for myself and Ian. We know what Golfers want and don’t want to penalize them with adverts when they want to view the best Golf has to offer. Invest NI’s R&D support allowed us to develop the software for the site to make all of the functionality we want a reality.

“The availability of skilled ICT professionals in Northern Ireland was a crucial factor in our decision to locate in Newry. Invest NI’s Jobs Fund support has also meant we are able to get a team in place quickly and begin capitalising on the huge interest in golf, both home in Northern Ireland and internationally.”

GolfJug is a golf & lifestyle specific online 24-7 TV station for golfers and golf fans, which will allow access to exclusive programming and extensive video of great golf occasions. The site is multiplatform and can be enjoyed on the move through smart-phone.
