Invest NI encourages diversity best practice

Feb 07, 2007

Invest Northern Ireland hosted an event at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle this week to help raise awareness of diversity issues in the hospitality sector.

The Diversity in the Workplace Seminar was attended by more than 33 people from local hotels and licensed guest inns. They heard from a number of experts including representatives from the Department for Employment and Learning and the Equality Commission. Topics covered included work permits, migrant workers and equality legislation, as well as how and where to access support and advice.

Commenting on the event, Victor Jordan, Director of Business Improvement Services at Invest NI said: “Many companies across Northern Ireland rely on migrant workers to provide labour so it is important to ensure employers are aware of the difficult issues faced by migrants and their responsibilities towards these employees.

“Everyone has the right to be treated fairly and with respect by their employers and this event focused on encouraging best practice with regard to diversity and equality.

“By highlighting issues and helping employers to access information and advice, they can enhance their capability by integrating their workforce and increasing motivation – factors which will contribute to business success.”
