Leslie Morrison, Chief Executive of Invest Northern Ireland has welcomed today’s announcement by Enterprise Minister, Arlene Foster, of the contract placement for a new direct telecommunications link to North America.
Leslie Morrison said: “This is a really exciting development which will offer Northern Ireland world-class infrastructure and direct high-speed communications to North America and improved connectivity into mainland Europe. It will also provide significantly increased resilience for telecoms.
“While this is particularly beneficial to businesses in sectors such as IT, financial services and multi-media, any company which needs to exchange large amounts of data in a fast and secure manner will benefit.
“This will be equally applicable to existing Northern Ireland businesses that need to service customers or markets overseas, and to inward investors requiring fast and reliable international connectivity.
“Northern Ireland will remain an attractive location for foreign direct investment and this telecoms infrastructure will enhance our competitiveness in both cost and technology terms.”
The €30 million investment was jointly brokered by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment in Northern Ireland and the Department of Communication, Energy and Natural Resources in the Republic of Ireland. The project is co-funded by the EU Interreg IVA programme.
Mr Morrison continued: “The fact that the transatlantic cable will be brought ashore in the North West could also enhance the competitiveness of that region.
“The North West Business Technology Zone, which involves cross-border cooperation between Invest NI and IDA Ireland, has already brought significant benefits and this new telecommunications link will consolidate and expand their scope.
I look forward to the project becoming operational and to both indigenous and overseas-owned companies maximising the international business opportunities that it affords.”
