New Resource Available To Agri-Food Businesses Wishing To Enter ROI Market

Sep 11, 2006

For the first time a new resource is available to agri-food businesses wishing to enter or strengthen their market presence in the Republic of Ireland.

Invest NI in co operation with the Department of Agriculture and the Food Strategy Implementation Partnership (FSIP) have appointed a new marketing advisor dedicated solely to helping the agri-food sector grow their presence in ROI.

With over two decades of industry experience the new marketing advisor, Gerry Murphy, has worked for some of the biggest players in the industry  including C&C and W&C McDonnell (Unilever) who represent world renowned brands such as Pepsi, Schweppes, Perrier, Oxo and Liptons tea.

“The southern market place has many opportunities for food and drinks companies that can produce innovative, well-differentiated products that will meet the needs of today’s demanding consumer”, said Gerry.

“My role will be to advise local agri-food businesses on how to position and package themselves more effectively, secure new business opportunities and ultimately increase their profit margins,” he continued.

The appointment follows the recruitment last year, of two new marketing advisors for GB. This appointment in ROI strengthens this unique sales team to increase the competitiveness of agri-food businesses in these important markets.

Commenting on the importance of the new position, and speaking on behalf of Invest NI and DARD Maynard Mawhinney, Director of Food at Invest NI said:

“With this new appointment we will be able to offer local agri-food and drinks companies the added expertise and guidance they need to take full advantage of market opportunities in the south.

“It will also further strengthen the support we currently offer the sector and highlights our commitment to developing sales further,” he continued.

The new appointment forms part of the delivery of ‘Fit for Market’ a two-year strategy designed to develop the marketing, capability and innovation potential of the 300 strong companies working within Northern Ireland’s evolving food and drink sector.

Managed by the Food Strategy Implementation Partnership (FSIP), an industry led steering group chaired by Dan Flinter, the strategy is being implemented by Invest NI in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Welcoming the new appointment Dan Flinter, Chairman of FSIP said:

“Gerry has an important role to fulfil and I would encourage local agri- food businesses to contact him and to utilise this professional resource. Professional industry advisors of this calibre can play a vital role in helping local businesses grow competitively in new markets.”
