Five Northern Ireland engineering companies will be on the starting grid for the first time at Autosport International, the world’s number one motorsport showpiece, which takes places at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 9-12 January.

They will be on an Invest Northern Ireland stand in the Autosport Engineering Hall, which covers every level of motorsport, including Formula 1, World Championship Rallying, Grand Prix Motorcycling, and karting. Around 20,000 trade visitors, mostly from the motorsport teams and the European automotive industry, are expected to visit the event.

Autosport International has attracted over 700 exhibitors, including manufacturers such as Audi, Citroen, MG, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Subaru.
Among celebrities lined up for the show are F1 drivers David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella and commentator Murray Walker.

Alan Hingston, Invest NI Director of Trade, said: “At Autosport International, the Northern Ireland companies will be displaying expertise in design, tooling, precision engineering and stress testing.

“They carry forward a respected engineering tradition stretching back to the dawn of the automotive age. Engineers and designers in Northern Ireland are helping to drive innovation across a range of industries through their mastery of the latest technology, first class engineering skills and knowledge of the latest techniques and advanced materials.

“It’s a tradition that includes innovations from the design of the first Vauxhall cars through the development of four-wheel drive, the pneumatic tyre, anti-lock brakes, the overdrive automatic gearbox, telescopic suspension and remote tyre pressure sensors.

“Our participation at Autosport International underlines our support for engineering companies to identify and develop niche market opportunities in competitive racing and rallying.

“Interest in many motorsport areas, especially karting, continues to grow strongly. This show provides an ideal platform for our companies to make contact with and display their expertise to key people from all sectors of this vibrant industry, ” he said.
